City threat summary

FCDO advises against all travel to within 10km of the border with Syria due to fighting and a heightened risk of terrorism, while the US State Department maintains a Level 2 advisory to exercise increased caution due to terrorism, armed conflict, and arbitrary detentions.

Turkey remains a welcoming, vibrant, and largely safe destination for travelers, with major cities like Istanbul operating normally despite rising regional tensions.

Country overview

Turkey's security environment has deteriorated markedly following the onset of U.S.-Iran hostilities on February 28, 2026, which introduced direct missile threat risk into Turkish airspace and prompted the U.S. State Department to order non-emergency personnel and family members to depart Consulate General Adana.

The U.S. State Department maintains a Level 2 advisory for most of Turkey, with a separate Level 4 Do Not Travel designation for southeastern Turkey due to terrorism and armed conflict, while the FCDO advises against all travel within 10 km of the Syrian border and against all but essential travel to Şırnak and Hakkari provinces.

Heightened anti-U.S. and anti-Western sentiment has been flagged across the country as a direct consequence of the February 28 operations, compounding existing terrorism and civil unrest risks in urban and tourist areas.
