City threat summary

Sharm El Sheikh sits within South Sinai, which is distinct from the active terrorism and armed conflict zones of North and Middle Sinai that carry a U.S. State Department 'Do Not Travel' designation; the resort area itself is not subject to that restriction, though the broader U.S. Level 2 'Exercise Increased Caution' advisory for Egypt cites terrorism, crime, and health risks.

Iranian-aligned actors have expressed interest in targeting tourist sites, transportation centers, and resorts in the region, requiring sustained situational awareness.

Civil unrest risk remains present at a low level, with U.S. Embassy Cairo advising avoidance of all demonstrations and large gatherings amid ongoing regional tensions.

Country overview

Egypt presents a bifurcated security environment in which major cities and principal tourist areas operate under an elevated but manageable threat posture, while North and Middle Sinai, Western Desert border zones, and areas near the Libya frontier remain genuinely dangerous and subject to Do Not Travel guidance from the U.S. State Department.

A drone strike on Damietta port in July 2026 — the first known strike on Egyptian territory since the onset of regional hostilities — introduced a new spillover threat vector to infrastructure previously considered outside the active conflict zone.

Egypt's overall terrorism trajectory has nonetheless improved, with the country moving from the medium to the low category in the 2026 Global Terrorism Index, reflecting a sustained decline in Wilayat Sinai attack activity.
