Country overview

China presents an elevated and stable threat environment shaped by authoritarian governance, active surveillance of foreign nationals, and a legal framework that expands authorities' power to detain, interrogate, and impose exit bans with limited transparency or recourse.

Isolated acts of public violence — including vehicle-ramming and knife attacks — have targeted crowded civilian spaces, with foreigners among those affected.

Military tensions in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea add a broader geopolitical layer to the operating environment, though direct spillover into civilian travel disruption remains limited at present.
