City threat summary

Amman carries an elevated terrorism risk and medium-level political violence threat, with the broader regional security environment remaining complex and subject to rapid change due to ongoing conflict in neighboring countries.

The U.S. Department of State has issued a Level 3 — Reconsider Travel advisory for Jordan, and ordered the departure of non-emergency U.S. government personnel and their families in March 2026 citing safety risks.

Street crime in Amman is assessed as low-threat but present, primarily in the form of petty theft and opportunistic targeting of foreigners, while frequent protests related to regional conflict and economic grievances occur across the city and can escalate unpredictably.

Country overview

Jordan operates under a materially elevated threat environment shaped by the ongoing U.S.–Iran hostilities that began in February 2026, with Iranian missiles and drones having entered Jordanian airspace on multiple occasions and Jordanian air defences activated in response.

The U.S. State Department maintains a Level 3 — Reconsider Travel advisory, and the UK FCDO advises against all travel within 3km of the Syrian border, while EASA advises operators not to transit the Amman Flight Information Region at any altitude.

Domestically, the Hashemite government under Prime Minister Jafar Hassan remains stable, but regional escalation, cross-border smuggling networks, terrorist plotting, and periodic protest activity collectively sustain a persistently elevated risk picture.
