City threat summary

Dublin presents a generally stable security environment, with government advisories at the lowest advisory tier; however, travelers should remain alert to elevated opportunistic street crime in tourist-heavy urban areas, including bag snatching and vehicle break-ins targeting rental cars.

Civil unrest in the form of protests and large public demonstrations can arise with limited warning in central Dublin and may occasionally turn disorderly.

Ireland's Independent Examiner of Security Legislation has identified a meaningful terrorism risk landscape encompassing Islamist extremism, lone-actor threats, hostile state actors, and emerging far-right and far-left activity, meaning the terrorism threat, while historically low in terms of incidents, warrants continued situational awareness.

Country overview

Ireland remains a stable, well-governed democracy rated at Level 1 — Exercise Normal Precautions — by both the U.S. Department of State and the UK FCDO, reflecting one of the lowest-risk operating environments in Europe.

The principal day-to-day security concern for travelers is opportunistic petty crime in tourist areas, rather than organized violence or civil unrest.

However, Ireland's Independent Examiner of Security Legislation has assessed that the threat landscape has broadened in recent years, encompassing Islamist terrorism, far-right and far-left extremism, dissident republican activity, and hostile state actors — though none of these have materially elevated the country's overall threat tier.

The government is stable and functioning, with its attention substantially occupied by the EU Council Presidency from July 2026 and preparations for the European Political Community Summit in November.
